Build a picture of your retirement paycheck
Separate essential expenses—housing, food, insurance and healthcare—from travel, gifts and other flexible spending. Include irregular costs such as home repairs. Then list Social Security, pensions, employment income and other income sources, noting when each begins and whether it adjusts for inflation.
The difference between expenses and income is the gap your savings may need to cover. A larger account balance does not automatically mean a sustainable withdrawal plan. Consider how long retirement could last and what changes if one spouse dies.
Coordinate the main sources of income
Social Security
Claiming age affects your monthly retirement benefit. Starting before full retirement age generally reduces it; delaying beyond full retirement age increases it until age 70. Health, cash needs, work plans and spousal or survivor benefits all matter. Compare personalized estimates in your Social Security account rather than choosing solely by a headline rule.
Pensions and survivor choices
Review single-life and survivor payment options, any lump-sum alternative, inflation adjustments and beneficiary provisions. A higher initial payment may provide less protection to a surviving spouse. Some elections cannot be changed after payments begin.
Retirement accounts and other savings
IRAs, workplace plans and taxable savings have different tax and withdrawal rules. Account for market volatility, inflation, fees and access to emergency funds. There is no withdrawal percentage that guarantees success for every household.
Annuities where appropriate
An annuity may provide contractual income, depending on its terms. Compare immediate and deferred income, survivor options, surrender charges, liquidity limits and optional rider costs. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer. An annuity inside a tax-deferred retirement account does not provide additional tax deferral. It should be evaluated for its insurance features and overall fit.
Plan for taxes and changing costs
Coordinate withdrawals and possible Roth conversions with your tax professional. Required minimum distributions depend on account type, age and applicable rules; inherited accounts can have different requirements. An RMD is a tax requirement, not a recommendation for how much to spend. Review healthcare costs, Medicare premiums and potential long-term care expenses alongside other spending.
Questions worth answering before retirement
- Which expenses must be covered every month?
- What income continues for a surviving spouse?
- How much accessible cash would cover an unexpected expense?
- What happens if investments fall early in retirement?
- Which payments grow with inflation, and which remain fixed?
- What fees, taxes or surrender charges apply when money is accessed?
Common questions
Should I claim Social Security as soon as I retire?
Retiring and claiming are separate decisions. Compare the cost of using other resources while waiting with the larger later benefit and your household circumstances.
Is an annuity right for everyone?
No. Income guarantees can be useful, but liquidity, costs, insurer strength and existing income all matter. Compare alternatives and understand the contract before committing.
How often should I revisit the plan?
Review at least annually and after major changes in health, family circumstances, spending or employment. Update beneficiaries and coordinate decisions across accounts.
Prepare for your conversation
Bring a spending estimate, Social Security estimates, pension options and a summary of existing accounts and insurance. Do not send account numbers, medical records or Social Security numbers through a general contact form.
